Maxtor have been manufacturing hard drives for the PC and Server-Business market since 1990. They have one of the best reputations for reliability in the hard disk market. I have a WD My Book 500GB Essential Edition USB-attached hard drive which failed yesterday.

Maxtor drives are also well-known for their line of "musical" hard disks that have a very high rate of bearing (motor) failure. When this occurs the spindle gets stuck and motor voice coil starts producing a mobile phone type melody. Raid 5 failure. Recently, we had a drive fail. As expected, the array still functioned. We
shut the system down, swapped out the defective drive and started the system
up. We verified that the correct drive was swapped out and then let the
controller start the rebuilding process on the array. At about 30%, the system reported that the rebuild failed. The replacement drive was surface scanned and it didn't show any errors. We do not understand why the rebuild failed?
