Im running windows XP Home Edition on a Time Computer laptop which is about 10 months old and has an AMD Athlon 1800 processor and 384 Ram.. Can a power surge destroy a HD? I have a motherboard that was fried as was well the power supply when the pc was moved from one location to another. I shutdown and attach the HD and the system will not power up. I remove the HD and the system powers up. Its the only HD and the jumpers are set to master. The system wont power up.

Maxtor drives are also well-known for their line of "musical" hard disks that have a very high rate of bearing (motor) failure. When this occurs the spindle gets stuck and motor voice coil starts producing a mobile phone type melody.
